Vancity Vendor: SL Photography

From microscopes to macro lenses, Ming Sun is not your average Vancouver wedding photographer. He has a masters degree in molecular biology from Concordia University in Montreal, but his passion for photography eventually outgrew his love for science. Ming is a self-taught photographer and believes that if one is passionate enough, any obstacle can be conquered and dreams can be achieved. He loves the photojournalistic approach and capturing strong emotions in order to tell a compelling story. It has been 4 years since SL Photography was created and they have completed at least 40 weddings and counting.

A Few Words With Ming…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“We offer a great hourly rate of $200/hour. If a couple would like to hire us just for a few hours for the most important part(s) of their wedding, we can definitely provide a customized quote based on the information we receive and the hours.”

SL Photography

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“As a scientist as well as an artist, I constantly love to experiment; from the images you will see many uniquely composed photos, unique angles and unique lighting, all of which resulted from novel ideas. I also love to blend the dramatic, epic scenery our cities and nature offer with the couple. You will find lots of images like that from our website.”

SL Photography

How would you describe your shooting and photo editing style?
“Modern journalistic style blended with creative lighting and other technical tricks. We are great at not to disturb the natural flow of the wedding day, at the same time, we run around a LOT to find all kinds of angles to cover all the details. Everyone in the team is super easy going people with great personalities too, so you will find it super easy to not to get shy in front of our cameras. Our editing approach is as natural as possible and we stay royal to the journalism spirit. Photos will be only get color corrected, cropped accordingly and have some basic touch-ups done.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“Capturing those Kodak moments. Celebrating the big day with every couple, their families and guests. It’s also a nice break from my science job!”

SL Photography

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it? (Please provide picture.)
“A double exposure photo of a couple kissing. The couple wanted to blend the cherry blossom into their photo in a special way and I remembered this special technique. So there! This image was born.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“Reception, always reception! The couple is no longer stressed about the timing once the reception starts, people enjoy food and drink, music and dance, conversations with friends and families. People are more relaxed and we can capture lots of good moments.”

SL Photography

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“Gastown. Gastown is trendy, cultural and it provides many unique spots for creative photography. The streets are alive. We can shoot there during the day or after dark (street lights look great when lit). On rainy days, Gastown also provides a lot of covers so the couple doesn’t get wet.”

SL Photography What should your clients expect when they have their first consultation with you?
“The clients should have their most important questions ready for us and we always ask the clients to start preparing a detailed wedding day schedule for us. We think meeting the client in person before the wedding is very important, this way we could get to know each other directly.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Wedding day never goes perfectly as planned. It’s necessary to have a schedule but if things get a little behind, do not sweat it and get upset. It’s a day you two should just focus on each other, focus on the family and the love. Everything else doesn’t matter nearly as much.”
