Vancity Vendor: Tamea Burd Photography

Tamea Burd received her first camera as a gift when she was just about 10 years old, and she definitely put it to good use. Her life changed when, by chance, she got her hands on a book compilation of Life Magazine photographs. After hours of admiring the photos, she fell in love with the art and was determined to make it a part of her life. She focused her studies in photography and now she owns and operates her business, Tamea Burd Photography, which has been around for the last 5 years.

Tamea is one of the few eco-friendly wedding photographers in Vancouver. She specializes in weddings, portrait, lifestyle, and corporate photography. Wedding commissions start at $1,500 and are all-inclusive meaning you get unlimited exposures, individual retouching on all photos, a disc of up to 600 high resolution images, and a private online wedding slideshow. Tamea limits herself to 3 weddings a month because to her, quality is much more important than quantity.

Tamea meticulously edits each photo to make it look as natural as it can be. She believes that fancy editing or shooting is not what makes a photo amazing, it’s the people in it. She likes to keep the images true to form. To see more of Tamea’s work, check out her Facebook page.

A Few Words With Tamea…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“In addition to offering all of my services for all-inclusive pricing, I also give my clients the unique option of customizable wedding photography coverage. My services are structured to give you any range of time between four and ten hours (including by the half hour). Who wants to be forced to pick a standard package for more time than you actually need? Instead, my personalized options allow total freedom for the amount of custom coverage you can choose. My lower budget brides generally choose my six hour coverage option, which allows for enough time to get photos of the ceremony, photos of the wedding party and families, as well as the photos of the bride and groom alone together.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field? What makes you eco-friendly?
“Well, I’m often told that my images have a natural, personal feel that seems to be unique these days. I think it’s because I don’t get caught up in photography trends and instead, I just try to capture people in a way that’s genuine and real.

To my knowledge, I’m the only professional, full time photographer in Vancouver who has a ‘green’ business:

  • All photos are distributed exclusively in digital format.
  • I recycle and use recycled and sustainable materials.
  • All of my professional lighting is done with compact fluorescent bulbs.
  • My supplies are bought locally to Vancouver whenever possible.
  • My clients are encouraged to make eco-friendly choices about their photography needs.

Even though it does set me apart, I’d love to see more photographers being eco-friendly!”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“The fact that it never feels like a job! When you love what you do for a living, work is a pleasure. It’s amazing to get paid to do something that not only makes me happy; it brings joy to other people as well.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“Honestly, every wedding is different and each one offers something new and lovely to capture. There isn’t one particular part of a wedding I like best, because my favourite thing to shoot is anything and everything that shows how much people love each other”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“Now this one I do have a simple answer for! I love the whole area between Jericho Beach and Locarno Pier. It’s just magical down there. So many beautiful spots and so much variety… Sandy beach, wooden pier, grassy hills, fields, ponds, trees, sculptures… Plus there’s always wild bunnies hopping around!”

What gear do you use?
“I work with the Sony line of professional photography equipment. When I went digital, I chose Sony because they’re compatible with the old Minolta lenses as well as the Zeiss line of lenses, which are phenomenal.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“When you’re choosing your wedding photographer, go with your heart, not your wallet. If you’ve met with a few photographers and they all offer similar services, prices and styles; don’t base your decision simply on whoever has the lowest rate… On your wedding day, you’ll spend more time with your photographer than anyone else, and it’s going to be one of the most emotional days of your life. You want to choose someone who you really click (pardon the unintentional pun) with and feel comfortable with. Choose the photographer you feel is the best fit for you personally, not just financially.”
