Vancity Vendor: Taylor Roades Photography

Taylor Roades Photography At first, photography wasn’t in Taylor Roades’ sights when it came to her career. You might even say that it found her. She met a photographer during one of her travels and was in awe of her pictures. Taylor said that planted the seed. At school, now a business student, she was admiring professional photographer Brian Skerry’s underwater shots for hours in her lonely dorm room. It was then that she realized her true calling. She called her mom and broke the news. Her mom didn’t believe it at first but now, I think Taylor has eased her concerns!

For the last four years, Taylor Roades Photography has been a part of many couples’ special days. She has been shooting in Toronto mostly but has now decided to make the West Coast her permanent home… lucky us! Her base packages start at $2,900 and includes full day coverage, high resolution files, and a wedding slideshow. She also offers albums and print services and audio coverage for the ceremony and speeches. If her photojournalistic style of photography is to your liking, feel free to set up a consultation with her by checking out the following links:

A Few Words With Taylor…

What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“I do offer elopement and weekday packages. All my couples get the high resolution photos in every package, they are welcome to design and print on their own wedding photos, at places with rates that I as a small business could never provide.”

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I like to think I see the subtleties. How your mother proudly has your wedding invite stuck to her fridge. The dirt in the windowsill your flower girls have written their names in. The balancing act of your Uncle Jon up a rocky slope with no shoes and a full glass of wine. I read body language. A touch, a smile through tears, a muffled laugh. The slight readjustment of a new ring on the third finger. I want my photography work to be deeper than the dress and the shoes. To look beyond the surface and to notice the small things that, just maybe, are the most important. The thing that differentiates one photographer from the next is the way we see the world, and I see think I see the tiny beautiful things.”

How would you describe your shooting style?
“Again subtle, I try to be as unobtrusive as possible and document more than direct.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I love that I am creating something with longevity for people, and that with my slideshows I bring to people tears.”

What was your favourite photo from a wedding in 2014 and why.
“I can’t choose one, but I did a year end blog post it is never one single photo but a collection that allows for context. That is why I do full day coverage and why bringing the photos together is so important to me.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“I think the speeches are my favourite part of the day. I try and get to know couples beforehand I really do but there is only so much they share. Their friends and family can sometimes do a better job. There is so much emotion in speeches, laughter, tears and it is sometimes the only time in their life when friends and family get to publicly share how much of appreciation they have for those people.”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“Anywhere with the ocean in view.”

What should your clients expect when they have their first consultation with you?
“I like to get to know the people I am working for, the more we feel like friends the less my job feels like work, and the more people are able to relax in front of the camera. I like to blend into the day without too much direction other than for portraits so I hope that from the first consult I can answer all the questions couples have and along with my work create a trust that makes it easy for that to happen.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Enjoy the day, it goes by so quickly, and happiness comes through best in the photos.”
