Vancity Vendor: TDub Photography

Tom Dubowski - TDub Photography Tom Dubowski, or TDub for short, is new to the Vancouver wedding industry and his career is off to a great start. His passion for shooting began when he got his first camera and taught himself the ins and outs of photography. Covering weddings allows him to share his creativity with others as well as capture genuine moments between couples in love. His clients love his laid-back nature and Tom is happy to put people at ease. As a married man himself, he can relate to how his couples are feeling throughout the planning process, as he’s been through it before.

TDub Photography offers affordable wedding packages as well as family portraits and corporate headshots. His rate starts at $1,000. He offers a selection of wedding day packages. For example, at a cost of $1,200, couples will receive 6 hours of coverage, 300-500 edited images in an online gallery and a USB stick, and a free engagement session. Tom is also generously offering a special Vancity Bride deal:

A Few Words With Tom…

TDub Photography What do you have to offer for brides with lower budgets?
“I offer some of the most competitive rates for brides on a budget, and a more than fair price for any additional hours photography work. The fact my packages include an engagement session is a real bonus and gets some more images to my clients. I even offer an off the books 4 hour photography package for $1,000 should any bride require only that amount of time.  That also includes an engagement session which is an awesome added bonus.

What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“I believe what sets me apart is the level of personal touch that I give to each and every client. Preparing for a wedding can be really stressful and I try and make people feel as comfortable as possible, long after the images are handed over to the clients. One of the biggest compliments for me is that many of my clients come back and thank me, as do their guests and say how professional I was and how they had such an incredible experience.”

How would you describe your shooting and photo editing style?
“I am very laid back but I am also always looking to get a great shot. My personal style is about capturing a wonderful story in images that will be treasured for a lifetime. I try and make images that are candid and represent honest and true emotion.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I love taking pictures of people.  I think expressions can tell so many words, and I love showing that off in my photos.  I have this great picture of a couple kissing after getting married, and the best man is clapping next to them and the little boy ring bearer is just looking along.  There’s so much emotion in that picture, it’s one of my favorites, and I love capturing moments like that.”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“I was photographing a couple this past summer and had placed a speed light behind them while they were kissing.  It’s a style and method I’ve seen before but never had an opportunity to do it.  It was a nice rim light on their hair and a bug starburst came through. It was super cool.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“I love spending time with the couples after they get married.  The nerves have settled down a bit (somewhat), and it’s a great way to steal them away for an hour or so (unless they’re doing a first look then this happens before) and get some really natural shots. I find you can capture some really candid and open shots with just the lucky couple, looking at each other or just walking around.”

Where is your favourite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“Granville Island has some great places for engagement and wedding shots.  There’s a lot of color around the area, with all those Emily Carr buildings, and when it’s springtime you can get some really nice shots with some flowering trees around there.  There’s a lot of surprise areas on that small island.”

TDub Photography Do you draw inspiration from other photographers?
“I believe I have my own style, I like seeing what other people doing as well.  If there’s something that catches my eye, I’ll give it a shot.  That’s the beauty about photography and our community.  Everyone seems to draw emotion and inspiration for their own images and other peoples’ as well.  It’s such a fun craft to be doing.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“If I were to give one piece of advice to a couple it would be to STRONGLY consider doing a First Look. Why do I like to recommend this? Since weddings go by SO quick, I really feel prefer it’s the one time the couple can slow down and be alone collectively (photographers must be very photojournalistic throughout this time, and let the couple have their second earlier than insisting on any poses or something like that). Doing a First Look actually frees you up and permits you to loosen up throughout cocktail hour or mingle along with your friends. Something I like to tell my clients to do all the time!”
