Vancity Vendor: White Dahlia Studios

Christie Lo Husband and wife Kin and Christie Lo know the importance of having a great connection with their clients, it was something they didn’t experience with a previous photographer they hired. They felt that they didn’t get the best customer service and the end product was not up to standard. This inspired them to take action and they themselves decided to pursue a career in wedding photography after they got hitched. Both are self taught with a passion for storytelling; Kin has a background in graphic and web design which is also a great asset. For the last 2 years (and counting), Christie and Kin have been living out their dreams and sharing in their couples’ precious memories.

Kin Lo

The pair created White Dahlia Studios, which specializes in fine art wedding photography, but they also capture family and maternity sessions. Rates start with their Silver Package: $1,800 for 6 hours of coverage, two photographers, and 350+ edited photos on a custom USB. Their Gold package is $2,500 and includes up to 12 hours of coverage, 2 photographers, and 700+ edited images. They also have an Elopement Package for $900. This is similar to their Silver Package except you only get 2-3 hours of coverage on the wedding day and the album is not included. Both Christie and Kin will still be there though, as well as provide a complimentary engagement session. Their home studio is located in Burnaby and are eager to meet you over coffee or tea. They’d love to hear your stories and figure out what would best suit for your event so if you want more information about them, visit their website,be a fan on Facebook and follow them on Twitter. They tell me once a year they offer up free engagement sessions prior to booking so keep an eye out for this promotion!

A Few Words With Christie & Kin…

White Dahlia Studios What sets you apart from others in the same field?
“We aim to give as much of our time as possible to each couple in order to capture the best photos, as opposed to charging per hour. Our main focus is to create beautiful imagery by capturing raw emotions while also creating timeless photos. We take our time in truly getting to know each couple. From there, we plan their engagement sessions carefully. We are always collecting vintage props such as suitcases, picnic baskets, blankets and includes these props in our photo sessions. Our engagement sessions are complimentary with all our wedding packages. This is a way for us to get to know each couple and their stories and also allows them to be comfortable in front of the camera prior to their wedding day.”

How would you describe your shooting and photo editing style?
“Our style is a blend of photojournalistic photography with magazine style portraits. With the beautiful locations, raw emotional feelings and unique characters, photography becomes a work of art. Our creativity truly comes from our heart and soul.”

White Dahlia Studios What do you enjoy most about your job?
“We truly enjoy every part of this job! We love how every wedding is different and unique and it is truly an honor for us to have the opportunity to document each wedding. What makes us happiest is when we see how happy the couples are when they see their wedding photos. It makes this job worthwhile.”

What was the most creative shot you took and how did you come up with it?
“The most creative shot we took was in Granville Island. It was very last minute when the bride and groom decided to take photos in this location. While walking around with the couple, we found these stairs. A lot of the creative shots we took aren’t planned, but happens on the spot.”

Which part of the wedding is your most favourite to shoot and why?
“Our most favorite part of the wedding is when the bride walks down the aisle. It is always beautiful seeing the bride’s expression and the groom’s reaction!”

Where is your favorite place/part of the city to take pictures for a shoot?
“My favorite place of the city to take pictures is Iona Beach in Richmond. This location is great because it is so quiet and normally there aren’t a lot of people around. It gives us time to work with the couple.”

If you had one piece of advice for a bride and groom, what would it be?
“Stay calm and have fun! Enjoy every moment of your wedding day; it will go by really fast! When it rains or snow, don’t be afraid to go outside or get your dress dirty. Sometimes these unplanned moments are the best.”
