New Westminster Budget Wedding: Brie and Jesse

Brie + Jesse - photo by Two Peas Photography In the spring of 2012, Brie was helping organize a community event and needed to rent some sound equipment. She went to a neighbourhood Tom Lee Music store and dealt with Jesse, who was the manager. She must have made a big impression on him because when she had to cancel the equipment rental, Jesse still showed up at the event, found her and asked her out. Two anniversaries later, something magical happened. Jesse had to go out of town the weekend before their anniversary date when it occurred to him that, he shouldn’t wait to propose and their anniversary was the day to do it. That didn’t really leave him much time to prepare, 4 hours to be exact. He woke up very early on their anniversary and said he was going for a swim, when in fact, he bought a ring, asked for permission from her parents and told his parents the good news. Meanwhile, Brie was waiting at home and getting quite impatient (and grumpy) because it seemed that Jesse had just disappeared. He finally came back and headed off to Crescent Beach for their date, where they had a nice picnic. He brought his ukulele, they sang some songs and blew some bubbles. Brie noticed there was something rattling in hers though… and Jesse said to dump it out and see. It was a diamond ring and before he could even ask the question, Brie was already tearing up and nodding. It was a big month for Brie, having just completed her first marathon, now she gets to run through life’s ups and downs with her soulmate.

Brie and Jesse’s intimate wedding was held on a gorgeous September day this year at the Rose Garden at Queen’s Park in New Westminster. Their budget was $15,000 and they wanted something sweet and simple… but it seems their wedding exceeded their expectations (without breaking the bank). One of the things that really caught my eye was their colour scheme. I love their grey and navy blue with the pop of colour in the bride and bridesmaids’ bouquets. Even better, the bride saved big on her wedding dress by buying a bridesmaid dress in ivory. A great tip, and also one I agree with.

After the ceremony, they were able to head out to New Westminster Quay and took advantage of the very versatile location for photos. So many great lines, a natural backdrop, an industrial look, and even a ship!

A reception followed at Wild Rice. The venue was lightly decorated but Brie used her talents as a graphic designer to create the seating chart and table numbers to help tie the event together. (She also made her own invitations and save the dates!) It was a nice use of their engagement photos. They also had a unique guest book. They asked their friends and family to write their well wishes on a framed heart print which will then be hung in their home. Such a nice memento of an unforgettable day.

For those with a sweeth tooth, they also had a candy buffet and Brie’s mom even made cupcakes (they look amazing!). I also love the simplicity of their wedding cake. The bright flowers are eye-catching and I hear it tasted quite good too!

There’s a lot to love about this wedding, but also the couple. They complement each other really well and support each other on everything. You know it’s love when Jesse understands Brie’s need for epic 50+ kilometre trail running adventures. On a side note, if you’re looking for a great running blog, check out Brie’s website here. Congratulations, you two!

A Few Words With Brie…

Brie + Jesse - photo by Two Peas Photography During the planning stages, how did you imagine your wedding?  Did the final result live up to expectations?
“We imagined something simple and meaningful. I wanted to make it as easy and low maintenance as possible so I could enjoy the day. We are thrilled with how everything turned out. It was an amazing day and we were surrounded by so much love. I was able to enjoy myself and let the pieces fall into place. I had expected at least one thing go wrong (doesn’t something always go wrong?) but was surprised that there were no problems!”

How many DIY projects did you have? What were they and why did you decide to take all of these on?
“My goal was to do as little myself as possible. I designed my own email save-the-dates and invitations as well as designed and printed my seating chart and table numbers. I also created my own wedding website.”

What did you give away as wedding favors? Is there a reason why you chose them?
“The restaurant where we held the reception doesn’t serve coffee so we brought in coffee from a shop next door and bought mugs for the wedding favours. My mom and her friends help tag each one with guest names which served as the place cards.”

What did your guests think about your wedding?
“We had an overwhelmingly amazing response about our wedding (do people tell you if it’s bad?). We received lots of compliments on our officiant, the photographers, the bouquets, the venues, the food, the DJ, and the whole wedding in general!”

Brie + Jesse - photo by Two Peas Photography What did you splurge on and what did you save on? Why?
“We kept the budget pretty tight but it was important for us to have a quality photographer and we wanted two people shooting. I wouldn’t say we splurged on it but that was one of the larger ticket items for us! We saved on my wedding dress. I wanted something fairly simple and elegant and I didn’t want to spend a lot. I ended up ordering a bridesmaids dress in ivory. It was perfect and only about $350. I would recommend looking at this option for all budget brides. We also saved on the ceremony venue. For $234, we got a two-hour window in the rose garden and they provided seating for 50 people and a table. I’m told they also have umbrellas on hand in case it rains, but luckily that wasn’t an issue for us! There is a gazebo with hanging baskets and flowers everywhere. It was beautiful and we didn’t even have to decorate.”

If you could’ve done something differently, what would it be?
“I would have given a speech. My husband gave one for the both of us … but it was mostly about me and I wish I had done the same for him.”

After planning a wedding, what one advice would you give to future brides?
“Find ways to make your wedding your own. We didn’t have a vision for our wedding until we had the idea to hold our reception at our favourite restaurant – then things really started to fall into place! Set a really low budget goal and an upper limit of what you are willing to spend so you have a range. You probably won’t hit your goal but it will force you to make tough decisions and hopefully land somewhere within your budget range.”
