Sunshine Coast Budget Wedding: Heidi + Richard

Heidi + Richard - Photo by Michelle Crosby Photography Richard and Heidi met through mutual friends 4 years ago and it was love at first sight. It was inevitable that these two would make it  official… and that happened 3 years later in June 2012. They bought a home together that year, which is already quite a big step in their relationship… but Richard took it one step further. They were relishing the excitement of being new homeowners and he surprised Heidi when he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She was so shocked, she had to make sure he wasn’t kidding first before she enthusiastically said yes.

The couple had a modest destination wedding in the Sunshine Coast. They were going for simple, yet elegant and modern. Richard and Heidi got what they wished for and only spent $15,000 on their intimate wedding with 28 of their closest friends and family. To help cut down costs and personalize their event, the couple and their families took on quite a few DIY projects…

Invitations: They purchased an invitation design from a graphic designer and printed and assembled all their invitations, menus, programs and thank you cards.

Photobooth: The photobooth did double duty as entertainment and as a guestbook. They had a polaroid camera, props and a backdrop ready for their guests. The printed photos went in their guestbook with a sweet message written by each guest. The couple also made sure they had extra film so the guests can bring home some wacky photos for themselves.

Wooden Signs: Heidi’s dad created these beautiful signs… aren’t they gorgeous?

Cake and Cupcakes: Both were done by Heidi’s talented sister. The Playmobil bride and groom toppers were provided by her dad… a little family inside joke.

Makeup: Heidi was proactive and went to Sephora for a full makeup lesson and she and her sister did their own makeup for the wedding. She learned a new skill, has a complete makeup kit, and didn’t make a dent on the wedding budget. Win-win-win!

A Few Words With Heidi…

Why did you choose to have a destination wedding?
My parents live on the Sunshine Coast and we love how beautiful the area is. They have great venues over there if you’re willing to make the trip. It’s only a 40 minute ferry and an hour drive.”

Why did you choose to wear TOMS?
“My friend actually paints TOMS as a bit of a side job, so she made a pair for me for my wedding gift. I knew I wouldn’t survive the whole day in heels, so they were the perfect pair of reception/dancing shoes and came in handy when we were taking pictures. They also added a unique touch to the day!”

What did your guests think about your wedding?
We’ve received nothing but compliments from all our guests and even the venue. We tried to keep it light and fun.. I think we succeeded. The food was AMAZING, but I can’t take the credit for that!

What did you splurge on and what did you save on? Why?
“Our rings? Haha,I don’t think we splurged on anything. We shopped around and got great prices on everything. We also had a lot of help from family and friends.

If you could’ve done something differently, what would it be?
“Not a thing. Best day of my life surrounded by all the people we love! Thought I would regret not bringing our dog and having some pictures taken with him, but in hindsight it likely would have added a bit too much stress so I’m glad we sent all the dogs to the kennel.”

After planning a wedding, what one advice would you give to future brides?
“Have fun with it and don’t stress the small stuff. Get inspiration from Pinterest, but don’t let it become overwhelming.. Pick a few projects and make them great, not all of them. Make your wedding unique to you! When it comes down to it, the day is about you and your future husband… and if you’re married at the end of it, that’s all the matters.”
