Surrey Budget Wedding: Joanne + Pete

Who says you can’t find love at the workplace? That’s what happened with Joanne and Pete… innocent chats at work turned into long phone conversations until Pete finally asked her out on a date. Pete impressed Joanne on their first date in November 2008. He made her a very special dinner at his place by the beach in White Rock. Joanne had a feeling he was gonna be a keeper… and she was right. A year went by and Pete surprised her with a ring… but it wasn’t until 4 years later in 2013 that they set a date. They decided to tie the knot this past summer, on August 16th.

According to Joanne and Pete, their wedding day was “truly the BEST day” and her enthusiasm shows, as you will read below. The best part is that they stayed on budget – their 80 person wedding cost them below $15,000. They envisioned their perfect wedding day like this… family and friends relaxing, eating, drinking, and enjoying the beautiful sunset views from their venue… and that’s what they got! They also managed to pick vendors they were extremely happy with, who were cost-efficient, and provided great service… and I was happy to find out that one of them was the makeup team from Two Seventeen Beauty, whom Joanne found on my site :) But it was Joanne’s resourcefulness and creativity that really helped them stay under budget and made their big day a truly successful and economical dream wedding.

A Few Words With Joanne…

Joanne + Pete - Photos by Cheryl During the planning stages, how did you imagine your wedding?  Did the final result live up to expectations?
“We wanted a beautiful, intimate and relaxed wedding at the beach!!  The goal was to look around and see our family and friends just relaxed, eating great food, drinking and soaking up the sunset! AMAZING every time I looked around that is what I saw! A couple of my favourite photos are of our first dance and you can see all the shadows of our people outside enjoying a glass of wine, dessert and the sunset!!  It was the BEST day and the most gorgeous evening! It absolutely lived up to and surpassed my expectations!”

Did you plan your wedding yourself? If not, who helped you?
“Yes, with assistance from friends and family!!  A HUGE thank you to my close friend Marg!!”

How many DIY projects did you have? What were they and why did you decide to take all of these on?
“I had quite a few DIY projects….. I found a free template online for our invitations and information card! I edited them and had them printed at Staples. They turned out AWESOME! I printed our own table numbers, again found a simple wine label template online and printed them at home!  I made our table number holders out of wine corks, ribbon and silver string…. so simple, so pretty and crazy reasonable! Our decorations were mostly DIY, I purchased supplies in at Essential Packaging in Cloverdale!  We made LARGE paper flowers, smaller paper flowers & lots of ribbon. I also made my own birdcage veil and ordered a gorgeous silk magnolia to go with it from ETSY (Debby Hoffman Bridal)!”

Joanne + Pete - Photos by Cheryl What did you give away as wedding favors? Is there a reason why you chose them?
“Our Favour was another DIY: Pete and I are both coffee lovers, so we had French Roast Coffee Beans at each person’s place. I bought the bags at the party shop and printed the labels love is brewing and my Maid of Honour and my other best friend, Mieka, helped me pack them! Again Something I saw on ETSY; so cute and everyone had enough beans for a pot of coffee!”

What did your guests think about your wedding?
“Everyone enjoyed it…it was such a relaxed environment!  Raves about the food, dessert and the sunset!”

What did you splurge on and what did you save on? Why?
“We splurged on the food because we wanted great food!!! We eat so well every day at home, we love really great food and wanted to share a great meal with all of our family and friends.  Thanks to Greg and the LSRC Team! We saved on our alcohol; we had an open bar, but just served beer, wine and coolers! We saved on our flowers, still gorgeous, but so budget friendly! We splurged on our Photographer! Money WELL Spent! I splurged on my dress! Unbelievable! (I still spent much less than most do!) Gorgeous! We saved on our music: I did our music on my IPhone with an app called WEDDING DJ for $4.99 and music from ITUNES.  We had ceremony music, pre dinner music, dinner music and party music!!  So easy with the app!  We rented speakers and a microphone from Long and McQuade for $60…crazy!  My brother-in-law ran it for us! Fantastic!”

After planning a wedding, what one advice would you give to future brides?
“Take help when people offer, they wouldn’t offer if they didn’t want to help! Hire a photographer…. that is how you can keep your memories forever!  So happy we did it!! Hair and Make up- not only did they make me feel like a princess, I was also forced to sit for 2 hours before the wedding! That was wonderful! Thanks Kyla!”
