Vancouver Budget Wedding:
Kelly + Ben

Vancouver Budget Bride: Kelly + Ben

Ben put a lot of thought into his proposal plan for Kelly. Knowing that her recently departed grandfather was a huge part in her life, he decided to bring her to his favourite bench at Crescent Beach. This was where he decided to pop the question, on their first anniversary. She was incredibly touched that he made her grandfather’s memory a part of their engagement, and proceeded to jump into his arms and agreed to be his wife.

Kelly and Ben had a intimate ceremony with 55 friends and family at Milner Chapel in Langley. It was followed by a cocktail reception at the bride’s family home in White Rock. Instead of a traditional dinner, they decided to serve appetizers, dessert and have a full bar. Romance was their theme and their love for each other reflected in everything they had incorporated in their wedding. Of course, they made sure their guests had fun too, especially the little ones. What’s a backyard wedding without a kiddie pool, badminton and bocce ball? Thanks to the help of her friends and family, as well as some smart shopping, the couple only spent a modest $5,000 and still had the time of their lives.

A Few Words With Kelly…

During the planning stages, how did you imagine your wedding? Did the final result live up to expectations?
“Initially when we were planning the wedding we wanted a destination wedding, but when illness and work became an issue and it seemed like it was no longer feasible we wanted something small intimate and romantic, surrounded only by our families and our closest friends…. In the end the final result was everything we had hoped for… the weather was perfect… Aug 27, 2011 brought us the most incredible weather  – we couldn’t have asked for anything more.”

What personal or unique touches did you have for your wedding?
“Because romance was a huge theme to our wedding, we included many outdoor strung lights, morroccan lanterns, candles and beautiful silverware to give the old romatic vibe. My second dress for the day which was worn at the reception really exemplified this – it was very 40’s Hollywood glamour.”

How many DIY projects did you have? What were they and why did you decide to take all of these on?
“Everything was a DIY project – we had a website where our guests could RSVP, and learn a little bit about the bridal party – including pictures and bios. All décor was done by hand and done with love…. The food was prepared by myself my mother and my mother in law in the week prior to the wedding. This was the ultimate in bonding experiences… My husband and I sat and made our music playlists together, we wanted everyone to feel the love – and they did through our music. All other aspects of the wedding – the décor – the bridesmaids’ flowers etc. were all done by hand…. Fresh flowers picked days before at the Seattle Farmers Market – ladies go here, even if its just for inspiration – the flowers speak to you…”

What did you give away as wedding favors? Is there a reason why you chose them?
“As wedding favors – which were another DIY project my husband and I purchased small silver frames that could also stand as place card holders – we took our favorite of our engagement shots and individually stuck them in the frames – we had them in a hand strewn weaved basket with our thank you as a couple stated on an index card – they were a huge hit – we’ve heard many people use them as Christmas tree ornaments now and hang us from there tree.”

What did your guests think about your wedding?
“The one comment that came from everyone was that the food was amazing – the pictures and photographer were phenomenal and that the love in the air wasn’t this apparent at most weddings – people loved the chance to send us personal messages via a handycam one of my nearest and dearest Denene Campbell went around with….”

What did you splurge on and what did you save on? Why?
“Ben and I didn’t splurge on anything.  We saved on everything – we believed a wedding could be anything you wanted and anything was possible within a budget. The money we saved DIY sent us to Maui on a 13 day honeymoon… ladies anything can be done! Just make sure you have people surrounding you that are willing to help – don’t be afraid to ask!”

If you could’ve done something differently, what would it be?
“Not a thing!”

After planning a wedding, what one advice would you give to future brides?
“Take time for yourself… and something will always go wrong – don’t expect it to be perfect or go off without a hitch. There are things outside of your control. And lastly, always remember what the wedding is about – not money, not the dress, not the food or décor. Its about the love you have for one another. Rejoice and Embrace this because when you do, no matter what goes wrong it will all seem insignificant after…”
