Coquitlam Budget Wedding: Lisa + Chris

Lisa + Chris - Photo by Joanna Moss Photography Lisa and Chris met through their computer screens in 2004. After a week of back and forth emails, they decided to get together in person. Their first date was over coffee at Starbucks and it lasted 13 hours! They talked until 2AM, clearly these two had chemistry! Lisa & Chris pursued a relationship and 8 years later, their lives began to change. In one year, Lisa & Chris became parents to two adorable little twin boys and the new family moved to Boston for new job opportunities. As if she thought her year couldn’t get any better, Chris proposed to her on Christmas morning, capping off a very exciting and adventure-filled year.

On May 18, 2014, Lisa & Chris said their I Do’s in front of their closest friends and family. Their 36 guests were treated to an afternoon cocktail affair at Minnekhada Lodge in Coquitlam. They planned their intimate wedding themselves but sought help from their friends and family, which clearly paid off! They managed to keep their wedding costs to below $5,000 by making the most of the environment and the people around them.

A Few Words With Lisa…

Lisa + Chris - Photo by Joanna Moss Photography Why did you choose to have an intimate wedding?
Although money was a factor when planning our wedding, it was the location that dictated the intimate nature of our wedding. Our wedding took place at Minnekhada Park, a location that has a special and very sentimental meaning to Chris (his late father helped design the gardens).”

During the planning stages, how did you imagine your wedding?  Did the final result live up to expectations?
I imagined our wedding to be low-key and relaxed. Neither Chris nor I are super social, however it had been almost 2 years since we saw most of our family and friends. We envisioned our wedding to be a day of socializing and catching up with those we love. Although most of our wedding day is still a blur, I think the final result definitely lived up to expectation.”

Lisa + Chris - Photo by Joanna Moss Photography How many DIY projects did you have? What were they and why did you decide to take all of these on?
“Because we were planning our Vancouver-based wedding from Boston, we kept everything simple and low-key. We let Minnekhada Lodge be the backdrop of our wedding and did not use any DIY projects (although if we had been in Vancouver a little longer prior to our wedding, I totally would have gone all out on the DIY!)”

What did your guests think about your wedding?
Our guests were very impressed by the low-key nature of our wedding. They had fun, definitely enjoyed the food, and we enjoyed seeing everyone and socializing.”

What did you splurge on and what did you save on? Why?
I splurged on my hair and make-up. I was Lisa + Chris - Photo by Joanna Moss Photography able to find a beautiful dress (off the rack and on sale) and some amazing shoes at an amazing price (online shopping truly is the way to go!). That being said, the dress and shoes were so beautiful, they needed hair and makeup to match. I am definitely NOT a hair and make-up type person (I typically wear my hair in a ponytail and rarely use makeup). By having a cocktail reception, instead of a sit-down dinner reception, we were able to have the food we wanted at a fraction of the cost. We were also able to enlist the help of some friends to make the photography and decorations fit our budget.”

If you could’ve done something differently, what would it be?
I don’t think there is anything I would have changed about our wedding. Perhaps I would have served some wine, but the cost of a bar prevented us from even entertaining that idea.”

Lisa + Chris - Photo by Joanna Moss Photography How were you able to keep your wedding below $5000?
Chris and I are simple when it comes to parties and because we were flying back to Vancouver for our wedding, it was important that the cost was kept to a minimum. Using the help of close friends, and a relaxed attitude about how things HAD to look was instrumental in keeping the cost down. A friend of a friend offered to decorate our wedding hall at cost (we also used the natural beauty of Minnekhada Lodge as part of the décor). We had an afternoon cocktail party (sans alcohol), which meant our wedding decorations did not have to be too over the top. Plus, an afternoon cocktail party meant we could have delicious food at a cost significantly less than if we had a sit-down dinner. The photographer was a good friend of ours and offered to photograph our wedding as a generous gift (her photos did NOT disappoint.)”

After planning a wedding, what one advice would you give to future brides?
The key to keeping a wedding low-cost is ask your friends and family for help. Everyone has a skill – utilize it! Your wedding should be about you and your fiancé. You won’t be able to please everyone so just please yourself. Plan your wedding for what suits you. Enjoy every moment of your wedding day. It goes by so quickly it is difficult to remember everything!”
