Delta Budget Wedding: Mallory + Andrew

Mallory + Andrew - photo by Paper Rodeo A chance encounter in Australia was all it took for Mallory and Andrew to realize they were soulmates. Andrew was originally from Ontario but living in Surfers Paradise at the time; meanwhile, Mallory was on a 2-week road trip with one of her best friends. On the third night of her trip, at a pub crawl, they met and sparks flew. They spent only 8 hours together and Andrew promised that he was going to find her in Vancouver and show up at her apartment with a ring in a box. After two months of maintaining a long distance relationship, Andrew left his life in Australia and traveled across the Pacific so that they can be reunited. The ring came a year later.

The couple tied the knot at Cammidge House on August 14th this year. They wanted a beach wedding that is fun and relaxing for everyone. They succeeded in doing just that… the evidence is in all the photos! Mallory planned their $13k wedding herself but had a lot of help from her family and bridesmaids to create the many DIY decor that they had. There’s a lot to love in this wedding… from the hot red classic convertible to the canine ring bearers, the painted signs and thoughtful touches like blankets to keep everyone warm in the evening. They even took advantage of some amazing local craft beer by ordering kegs so they can have an open bar! Most of all, the best part about seeing these wedding photos are the smiles everyone had on their faces. You can really feel the love and laughter and you can’t help but feel like you were experiencing the big day with them.

A Few Words With Mallory…

How many DIY projects did you have? What were they and why did you decide to take all of these on?
“Lots! We did everything ourselves. We made our own bouquets and boutonnieres, the arbor, all the décor for the ceremony, the centerpieces (we found all the old bottles and driftwood pieces on the beach), burlap banners, signs, driftwood love story board and other picture frames, we even found a cool piece of driftwood for our guest book! I decided to take it on to keep costs down and it was fun making and searching for everything! Plus I had a lot of help from friends and family so that made everything easier.”

What did you give away as wedding favors? Is there a reason why you chose them?
“We gave out fun sunglasses with multi-coloured arms. We chose them on advice from my caterer, Wes Leveque of Urban Village Catering. He had seen it before and said they were a lot of fun for guests and photos. And he was right! We were also able to get them for super cheap from my bridesmaid Lesley’s mom’s company, Novel Toy.”

What did your guests think about your wedding?
“That it was a blast! Between the lawn games and the dance party there wasn’t a dull moment. We also received a lot of compliments on our relaxed but sweet ceremony and our dogs, the ring bearers! And the food, guests loved the food (thanks Wes!)!”

What did you splurge on and what did you save on? Why?
“We splurged on photographers and food so we could have awesome photos to remember the day and nothing is better than good food at a wedding! Definitely worth it! We also decided on an open bar of wine and beer. We got kegs from a new local brewery, Four Winds Brewing, and our food was also new local company Urban Village Catering so it did keep costs down a bit while splurging! We saved a lot on decorations since we did it all ourselves.”

If you could’ve done something differently, what would it be?
“I would have splurged to hire someone to set up and take down the reception. Since we did it all ourselves it was A LOT of work for the groom and groomsmen the day off and the morning after for cleanup.”

After planning a wedding, what one advice would you give to future brides?
“Even though it’s hard to, relax! No matter how much you plan and organize, things will not go exactly perfect. But that’s ok, because it’s your day, you are marrying the person you love and sharing it with the friends and family you love. So nothing else really matters.”
