Vancouver Budget Wedding: Natalie + Adam

Natalie and Adam are an online dating success story. 4 years after finding each other on Plenty of Fish, Natalie found herself on the seawall being proposed to by the love of her life with a gorgeous ring and a bouquet of balloons. It was a perfect start to the next phase of their lives together.

The couple had an intimate wedding (which cost less than 20k) that fit their low key and quirky personalities. Here’s what I mean… Batman & Hello Kitty cake toppers…

Coke bottle wedding favours (which, in my opinion, should be the only way Coke should be served in :P )… The couple also saved two of these bottles for them to pop open on their first anniversary…

They invited 80 guests to share their union, presided over by the talented Shawn Miller of Young, Hip and Married.

Their colour scheme of navy blue and white complemented Heritage Hall quite nicely. Despite being a budget-conscious bride and groom, they were able to create an event that’s a good mix of DIY and fun little splurges… and they executed it with style and flare.

Natalie’s tea-length wedding dress looked adorable on her but also was a steal at only $200 US! That was an amazing find. Adam looked dapper himself in his grey suit and blue tie.

Having the Tacofino food truck was a splurge but it surprised the guests with an unexpected treat to cap off the night… plus I know for a fact that their tacos are so amazing. Their family and friends were spoiled :P

Their wacky photobooth was also the hit of the party. It’s obvious by looking at these photos that the couple and their guests had the time of their lives. Natalie and Adam definitely had a wedding to remember.

A Few Words With Natalie…

How many DIY projects did you have? What were they and why did you decide to take all of these on?
“We didn’t have a lot of DIY, the main one was our centrepieces which were spray painted jars that we had saved up during our engagement. We added ribbons with our wedding colours on them and then our florist filled them with beautiful flowers. For our table numbers we used photos of us as children at that age eg table 7 had photos of us age 7. We had compliments as it was fun to float from table to table to see all the photos!”

What did your guests think about your wedding?
“We had guests come up and tell us it was their favourite wedding they had ever been to but it might have been the open bar talking. What most people have said after was that it was so “us”! We really just wanted a party to show how much we love each other.”

What did you splurge on and what did you save on? Why?
“We splurged on our officiant, who was amazing. He was perfect and helped to share our story. Guests after were so surprised he was not a long term friend by how well he spoke about us. We splurged on a photo booth one of my must have things for the wedding. Our fridge is covered in photo booth strips Adam and I have collected together during our 5+ years together on trips , so it just seemed like a great thing to have at the wedding. Guests loved it and it helped get people out of their seats. We also splurged on getting a food truck in Tacofino. We wanted an extra treat for our guests later in the night.

We saved by doing our own music, which was really fun, We made 7 different playlists for the night and spent a lot of time picking music that meant a lot to us and was fun to dance to also. I saved by buying my dress online in only cost $200 USD! We also did not have a huge amount of decorations. The hall we were at was so retro and we didn’t really want to take away from the beauty of the location.”

If you could’ve done something differently, what would it be?
“I wish we had a videographer. I was so against one as I have a limp and didn’t really want to see a video of my handicap. But I wish I had one for our speeches, they were so heartfelt . Adam’s brother gave the world’s best speech that had everyone laughing.”

After planning a wedding, what one advice would you give to future brides?
“I have two. One is cliche but enjoy the day it goes by so quickly. Don’t sweat the small stuff! My second advice is if you are not really traditional get your photos done before. Seeing Adam before really helped to get rid of any stress. We got to spend time with our parents and wedding party one on one, and even had time to stop and get pre-wedding Slurpees! It also was great after the ceremony to just be able to start celebrating with our friends and family and no have to leave to take photos.”
