Kisses on Canada Day

Kisses on Canada Day

Remember the proposal at YVR airport last New Year’s Day? The flash mob dancing to Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are,” the signs in different languages that say “Will you marry me?” After a 13 hour flight from the Philippines, Anne was surprised by that performance and a proposal from her loving boyfriend, Ricky, a moment she will never forget, especially since it was extensively covered by local media! (See some video here.)

Anne and Ricky were married just 7 months later on Canada Day.  Aboard the Wedding Yacht, Thomas, a viola player, played a serenade as Anne walked down the aisle. They were wed over water in front of 70 happy friends and family.

The wedding was memorable in so many ways. For entertainment, they had a magician. Unique custom-made comic books were handed out as wedding favors. Guests were encouraged to stand up and say a few words of encouragement to the bride and groom. They even ended the night with a bang, literally, as Ricky and Anne danced underneath impressive Canada Day fireworks on the outer deck of the yacht. An incredible, unforgettable day for a low budget of only $12,000.

A Few Words with Ricky and Anne…

Why did you choose to have your wedding on the Wedding Yacht?
“We looked at many different venues from churches, to gardens, to beaches, to halls, to hotels, to golf courses. However, when we stepped foot on The Wedding Yacht, we both felt a strong desire to get married there.  It was a bit expensive for our budget so we saved money by looking for photographers and videographers on Craigslist, getting a student from VCC to design our wedding cake, doing lots of bargaining with vendors, as well as cutting down on the guestlist.”

Which wedding traditions did you stick with, which did you leave out and why?
“We stuck with most of the wedding traditions: not seeing the groom or the wedding dress before the ceremony, speeches by parents, best man, and maid of honour, cake cutting, first dance, garter and bouquet toss, thank you speech by bride & groom. In addition, we had our own unique features such as a Wedding Magician.”

What did your guests think about your wedding?
“A lot of guests commented that it was one of the most beautiful weddings they had been to in their lives, especially because of The Wedding Yacht and the Canada Day fireworks.”

What aspect of the wedding did you splurge on, which did you save on and why?
“We splurged on the wedding venue by choosing to get married on The Wedding Yacht.  We were able to save on decorations because we had the natural view of the harbor as we sailed around.  We saved on the photographer and videographer (found them both on Craigslist).”

If you could’ve done something differently, what would it be?
“Plan earlier.  Research more.  Get help from friends.”

After planning a wedding, what one advice would you give to future brides?
“Here are our Top 5 Tips:

  • Stay calm at all times (you are a team working together with a common objective – always remember that)
  • Do your research (visit at least 3 vendors for each category before making a final decision)
  • Treat your vendors nicely (they will reciprocate with lots of perks!)
  • Get your RSVPs done quickly (we had a few last minute cancellations which created stress on our part)
  • Sign contracts (make sure everything is written down and clarified so there are no surprises)”
