Surrey Budget Wedding: Shannon + Derek

Shannon + Derek - photo by Alba Photography Shannon’s husband Derek gave her the surprise of a lifetime one November evening. Who would’ve thought that by the end of a long work day, Shannon would have a shiny new ring on her left hand? Here’s how the romantic proposal came to play. Derek knew that Shannon would be working so he got himself all decked out with a bouquet of flowers and hid behind a car in the parking lot where Shannon was. As she was coming out of the building and fumbling for her keys, he stepped out and caught her off guard. He told her how much he loved her, got down on one knee and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him… what else could she have said, but yes? To add icing the soon-to-be-wedding cake, Derek’s brother and sister-in-law were secretly taking photos the whole time… a great keepsake to mark the next phase of their lives.

Shannon and Derek said their I Do’s on September 27, 2014 in front of 175 guests. It takes a team to pull off a dream wedding, let alone a dream wedding within their means. The couple only spent under $15,000 (amazing for a wedding this large) and their guests were left happy, satisfied, and partied out. It was all because they weren’t afraid to ask for help from their friends and family, who used their skills to their advantage to create an event to remember. From growing their own flowers, homemade wedding cake and dessert, to friends stepping up to be their wedding vendors for the day… the couple couldn’t be more grateful that people cared so much for them to make this all happen. Shannon’s best friend and Maid of Honour Jill even gave a very creative and emotional speech, inspired by the song Love Story by Taylor Swift. She re-wrote the lyrics to reflect Shannon and Derek’s love story, something the couple will treasure forever.

The couple was hard at work for their own wedding too. As you will see in these photos, their bright and bubbly personalities shone through… from the assorted jewel-toned bridesmaid dresses to the colourful handmade signs and lanterns that adorned their reception venue. Their invitations were a big project as well as the wedding favours that the couple made for each of their guests… custom buttons, personalized for their guests! It’s hard to imagine by just reading so I’ll let you have a look at how their big day went… Get ready to be inspired! Thanks Shannon and Derek for sharing your stories and advice :)

A Few Words With Shannon…

During the planning stages, how did you imagine your wedding?  Did the final result live up to expectations?
“Derek and I sat down and visualized our wedding as colourful, fun and personal so everything that we planned and discussed came back to that.  We wanted our wedding to be a fun party where everyone could see how much we love each other and love our friends and family.  Every time we were asked what our theme was we would say colourful and fun!  That is exactly how our day went.  We had a blast and it was fantastic to see everyone having an awesome time.”

Shannon + Derek How many DIY projects did you have? What were they and why did you decide to take all of these on?
“We had quite a few DIY projects for our wedding. The biggest DIY project that we had were making personalized buttons for each of our guests to take home as favours.  Derek and I sat down and with some help came up with a list of things that were special about each guest to Derek and I and then made buttons for them with my button maker. This was definitely a time consuming project – but it was so worth it in the end.  We loved to see all of our guests wearing their buttons and it gave an immediate conversation starter at all of the tables!

Shannon + Derek - photo by Alba Photography I made our seating chart, the candle covers for table numbers spray-painted with chalkboard paint a vintage style mailbox I found for our cards.  I did all the chalkboards (except for the Wedding Party chart that Darcy made for us at the Ceremony) and I also designed the concept for some game cards for each table (MASH, Wedding Mad Libs and a Word Search) and my brother’s girlfriend designed the cards and our wedding invitations.  I then, with the help of my bridesmaid Jackie, assembled all of the invitations, stamped them with some personalized stamps I had made on Etsy and sent them out as a pretty big DIY project.  My Mom had her own DIY project of making all of the desserts for our reception (not including the cake which a dear friend made) and my Dad grew all of the Dahlias for our centerpieces and bouquets at the reception hall.  Each one of these projects was personal to me and I wanted to make sure that guests felt welcome and connected.  When I think of my Mom and Dad I always think of their hobbies (baking and gardening) so this was such a wonderful personal touch from my family for our wedding.”

What did your guests think about your wedding?
“Our guests all told us how much they enjoyed the wedding.  From the personalized buttons, s’more bar, variety of beers, wines and sparkling apple juices it was a great party.  Plus, everyone felt very connected and welcomed into this event and you could just see looking out how everyone was just enjoying being together and part of our wedding.  We were told that no one really wanted to leave and the dancing continued right up to the last moment before we had to close down for the night.”

Shannon + Derek - photo by Alba Photography What did you splurge on and what did you save on? Why?
“We splurged a bit on the catering – it was definitely our most expensive item on our budget list.  The rep at Fiesta Creative Catering though was fantastic to work with.  We chose a menu and then customized it to fit into our budget (we had hoped to keep the food at around $6,000.00 and in the end it was only $31.48 over that amount).  The food was excellent and we both decided that food was something guests remembered so we wanted to splurge on that. We also splurged a bit on staying at The Hotel Vancouver with my bridesmaids the night before the wedding and going there for our first night.  But Darcy, our coordinator, works there so she got us a great deal to book. We saved on almost everything else.  My dad growing our own flowers, and having a friend do the bridal bouquets and boutonnieres really saved a Shannon + Derek - photo by Alba Photography ton of money.  My sister-in-law is an amazing makeup artist and she did my makeup as her present to me and two other close friends did all of the bridal party’s hair as a wedding present.  My friend Sarah Dobsin started her photography business Alba Photography very recently and I had already talked to her about being our photographer before we had even officially been engaged! Another of our friends is an awesome DJ so we hired his company.  We loved working with friends on our wedding!  Friends of ours did all the music at our ceremony, which was also wonderfully personal and special to Derek and I.  My Mom making all of our desserts and a friend making our cake were also huge helps to the budget – and made our wedding more personal.  Asking around and using your resources is huge when it comes to weddings.  Also, join the wedding swap Facebook pages and go to the Bridal swap events and talk to past brides.  This was a huge savings for us as we got a ton of our decor second-hand or for way discounted prices.  We also didn’t get a limo as it was a luxury we decided to bypass on.  Also, don’t be afraid to keep on looking.  We looked at lots of different catering places and got quotes from them all before deciding on Fiesta.”

If you could’ve done something differently, what would it be?
“We would have had our ceremony and reception closer together.  It was a 40 minute drive between each and that ate into our time with our photographer.”

After planning a wedding, what one advice would you give to future brides?
“I would 100% advise to use all your resources – you never know who will have something you can borrow or use or some key advice you need.  Ask lots of questions, talk to past brides and do research and then keep everything organized in a binder – it’ll save you a ton of time in the end and keep you from losing your mind in all the busyness. Also – know what you want and stick to your guns.  Don’t let someone talk you out of what you’ve been dreaming of just because it’s different.  It’s your vision and you and your future husband’s marriage. ☺”
